Identification

14-15cm (5½-6 in)

  • Streaked brown above
  • White mantle stripes
  • Black markings on a white belly
  • Buff breast below.
  • Pink or light brown base to bill

Young Red-throated Pipit

Distribution

Asia from Russia eastwards.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • A. g. gustavi:
  • A. g. stejnegeri:
  • Commander Island; winters in eastern Asia
  • A. g. menzbieri:
  • Russian Far East and extreme north-eastern China; winter area unknown

A fourth subspecies, commandorensis is generally considered invalid[2]

Habitat

Damp tundra, open forest or marshland, coastal swampy meadows.

Behaviour

Breeding

The 4-5 eggs are laid into a ground nest.

Diet

Diet mainly consists of insects.
