Bubalornis niger

Identification

Very similar in habit and appearance to the White-billed Buffalo-Weaver. The female and juvenile birds are brown above and spotted or streaked below.

Distribution

Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Taxonomy

Bubalornis niger has two subspecies:1

  • B. n. niger
  • B. n. intermedius

Habitat

Dry savanna.

Behaviour

These birds build very large nests made of thorny sticks in baobabs and other large trees; these are used as communal roosts.
