Red-billed Duck - BirdForum Opus

Identification

AKA: Red-billed Teal

It is a dabbling duck. 43–48 cm long. Its cap and nape are black,with a pale face, and bright red bill. The body plumage is a dark brown edged with white. The secondary flight feathers are buff with a black stripe across them. The sexes are similar, but juveniles are duller than adults. The male has a whzzt call, whereas the female has a soft quack.

Distribution

Southern and eastern Africa.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Freshwater, open countryside.

Behaviour

It dabbles for plant food in water, or forages on land in the evening or at night. Nests are built on the ground in dense vegetation near water.
