Identification

Red-thighed Sparrowhawk (Western Little Sparrowhawk) Accipiter erythropus

Distribution

West and Central Africa. Breeds in Gambia, in Sierra Leone, Liberia and western Ivory Coast, in southern Ghana and from southern Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and Congo east to eastern Zaire and west Uganda and south to northern Angola.

Taxonomy

SUBSPECIES Two races recognised: larger and darker zenkeri is found from Cameroon to Uganda and south to Angola and nominate race in remainder of range.

Habitat

Dense forest, a little-known and rarely seen species.
