- Calandrella eremica
Identification
13 cm
- Rufous crown sometimes raised as a crest
- White throat and supercilium
- Upperside mostly sandy-brown with darker streaks and edges
- Underside pale washed buff, more so on flanks
Similar species
Likely to have more extensive black or black-and-rufous mark on upper breast and to have rufous wash and flanks and rump.
Distribution
Middle East: Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen)
Eastern Africa: Somalia
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- C. b. eremica:
- South-western Arabia
- C. b. daaroodensis:
Rufous-capped Lark was recently split from Blanford's Lark.
Habitat
Elevations above 600 m in Africa, above 1200 in Arabia. Found on rather open areas such as bare ground, short grass areas, and other areas with little vegetation including close to human habitation.
Behaviour
Moves around some outside of breeding season where vacates the highest areas used.
Food is essentially unknown but likely consists of insects and small seeds.
