Identification
17cm. Red brown head, black bill, yellow throat, red eye, purple legs and rufous back and tail.
Distribution
Angola, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Namibia.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Riverine thickets and palm savanna.
Behaviour
The diet includes butterflies, bees, wasps, locusts and ants which are mainly caught while foraging on the ground.
The nest is usually built 3-6 m above the ground or water, on a palm frond or base of a palm frond, or in a crevice in a tree trunk, or on a ledge; built with mud and plant material. Two to four eggs (pale green, speckled rufous) are laid.
