Distribution
Mountains of Sumatra and western Java and New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies accepted:
- S. s. saturata in Sumatra and Java - Javan Woodcock
- S. s. rosenbergii in New Guinea - New Guinea Woodcock
Some authorities (Clements, 2007; Sibley & Monroe, 1996) place New Guinea Woodcock (rosenbergii) within S. saturata. However, Howard & Moore (2003) recognize it as a full species and the Opus awaits further clarification.
