Contopus fumigatus


Mainly grey both above and below, with wings and upper-side of tail looking darker. The lower mandible is yellow-orange.


South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina.



There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • C. f. ardosiacus:
  • C. f. cineraceus:
  • Subtropical northern Venezuela (Yaracuy to Miranda)
  • C. f. duidae:
  • Tepuis of southern Venezuela (southern Bolívar and Amazonas), adjacent Guyana
  • C. f. zarumae:
  • southwestern Colombia (Nariño), western Ecuador, and northwestern Peru (south to southwestern Cajamarca)
  • C. f. fumigatus:
  • South-eastern Peru (Puno) and western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)
  • C. f. brachyrhynchus:
  • Soouth-eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz and Tarija) to north-western Argentina (Tucumán)


Forest, edges and disturbed areas, mostly in mountains and foothills.


It likes to sit high in a tree giving a series of chirps that can continue for a long time.
