Identification

63-76cm. Dark grey, appearing black, with white markings on the tail. The juvenile is mottled brown and tan. with markings around the eyes.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • B. s. sheffleri
  • B. s. solitarius

Formerly placed in the genus Harpyhaliaetus.

Habitat

Mountainous or hilly forests.
