The species Southern Grey Shrike used to contain many subspecies that previously had been included in Great Grey Shrike. Later data demonstrated that most of these did not belong together. The nominate subspecies was retained in a species that now has a new name:
- Lanius meridionalis -- Iberian Grey Shrike
The remaining subspecies were for now returned to:
- Lanius excubitor -- Great Grey Shrike
