Distribution

Mongolia to Central Asia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, India, Nepal, Tibet and southwest China.

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized:

• C. s. severtzowi

• Kashmir to northern India east to Nepal, Tibet and southwest China

• C. r. diabolicus:

• North-eastern Afghanistan (Sanglech region)

• C. r. kobdensis:

• Alai Mountains of western Mongolia to eastern and central Altai Mountains

It was formerly considered conspecific with Great Rosefinch and might be lumped again with that species.
