Identification
14 - 15cm. A bold-patterned babbler:
- Black crown and nape with broad white straks on central crown and nape
- Chestnut brown upperparts with broad white streaks on mantle and smaller ones on upperwing-coverts
- Rufescent brown tail
- Orange-buff erect lore feathers
- Greyish ear-coverts
- White face and underparts
- Breast side scaled black, flanks streaked dull buffy ochre
Sexes similar, juveniles with brownish crown.
Distribution
Locally found in southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
Generally uncommon. Good sites for this species are Taman Negara National Park and Danum Valley.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests where swampy areas are preferred. Up to 750m in mainland southeast Asia, 610m in Borneo and 200m in Sumatra although sometimes recorded higher.
Behaviour
Feeds on small insects.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, sometimes in small groups. Forages close to the ground.
Breeding season May to October in southeast Asia. The nest is an open cup made mainly of dead leaves. It's placed up to 1m above the ground in a palm-like plant. Lays 2 eggs.
