Identification
11 cm. A small, rufous-brown flycatcher.
- Rufous-brown head and upperparts
- Small buffish or buffish-white spots on lores
- Blackish remiges
- Whitish underparts with warm rufous on sides of neck and breast
Sexes similar. Juveniles similar to adult but with pale buff tips on wing-coverts, forming two wingbars.
Similar species
Smaller than Russet-backed Jungle Flycatcher, smaller bill, pale loral spot, rufous (instead of greyish) head and white (instead of buff-grey) underparts.
Distribution
Endemic to Sumba Island in the Lesser Sundas, Indonesia.
Rather common and widespread in its tiny range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests. Also in secondary forest, forest edge, bushy thickets and secondary growth.
Occurs up to c. 930 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on small invertebrates.
Forages solitary or in pairs. Behaves unobtrusive and is easily overlooked. Often low in the undergrowth or even on ground.
Breeding
An adult feeding two nestlings was observed in October. No other information about breeding.
Movements
This is a resident species.
