Alternative name: Swainson's Spurfowl

Identification

Distribution

Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Taxonomy

Pternistis vs. Francolinus

Sibley & Monroe (1996) placed this species in the genus Pternistis, but this genus has not been recognized by Clements (2007) or Howard & Moore (2003), and the Opus follows in this consensus.

Subspecies

Francolinus swainsonii has two subspecies:

  • F. s. swainsonii
  • F. s. lundazi

Habitat

Woodlands, brushlands and farmlands.
