Identification
16-18 cm
Male
- Mostly glossy black
- White central mantle
- Red eye
- Dark bill and legs
Female
- Head black with a brown wash
- White central mantle
- Tail brownish-black
- Rest of bird uniformly rufous-brown
- Eye and legs similar to male
- Immature similar to adults of same sex
- Tail very short in recent fledglings
Distribution
South-central Amazonian Brazil (River Tapajós to River Xingú, so mainly in the state or Para and in northernmost Mato Grosso).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
East Amazonian Fire-eye, Tapajos Fire-eye, and Western Fire-eye were formerly considered a single species under the name of White-backed Fire-eye.
Habitat
Evergreen forests where it especially is associated with spots of dense understory. Found in lowland up to less than 1000 m asl.
Behaviour
Food consists mainly of invertebrates but also includes small lizards.
Often seen hunting by jumping from a perch to where a prey is taken but especially when near army ant-swarms (frequent!) also hunting in a more active manner.
Vocalisation
Song includes duets of series of short whistles, where the male starts and the female immediately follows at a slightly higher pitch.
