Identification
30-35cm. Green, rufous vent and tail-tip, black bill, yellow upper mandible, a white band at the base of the bill. Dependent on group, some have a rufous patch near the base of the upper mandible or the lower mandible, some have white throats, others have blue, grey-blue, or black. The eye-ring ranges from blue to red, grey legs, dark iris.
Juveniles are duller.
Distribution
South west Mexico.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Humid forest and more open woodland, mainly at higher elevations.
Behaviour
They nest in an unlined hole in a tree, usually an old woodpecker nest, but sometimes a natural cavity. 3-4 white eggs are laid and are incubated by both parents for 14-15 days. The young fledge after a further 6 weeks.
The diet includes mainly fruit taken from trees, but also insects, lizards, bird eggs, and other small prey.
