Identification

19 - 20cm. A distinctive cotinga.

Male

  • Shining purplish-black head and body
  • White tail and most of wings
  • Pale yellow eye
  • Dark brownish-horn bill
  • Brownish-black legs

Female

  • Ash-grey above
  • Blacker on wings but with white feather edges
  • Paler grey and slightly mottled below

Immatures resemble females. Full adult plumage obviously aquired after two or three wing moults.

Distribution

Found in lower Amazonian Brazil south of the Amazon river.
Poorly known, apparently nowhere common.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Pompadour Cotinga and White-winged Cotinga.

Habitat

Canopy of moist lowland forests.
Occurs up to 400m.

Behaviour

Diet unknown, feeds probably mainly on fruits.
Apparently no fixed breeding season. Males are performing a display-flight from a treetop perch. One described nest was 5m above the ground in a rubber tree and contained one egg.
No movements known.
