Identification
13 cm. Black wings and crest, grey overall, white belly, rump and the underside of the long tail, black bill, dark brown eye and grey legs.
Distribution
Eastern Africa.
Taxonomy
There are three subspecies:
- E. a. albonotata - central Kenya, Uganda, south west Tanzania.
- E. a. subvaerulea, - southern Kenya to Malawi.
- E. a. swynnertoni - Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Formerly placed in genus Trochocercus as Trochocercus albonotatus.
Habitat
Evergreen montane forest and surrounding shrubland and bamboo.
Behaviour
The diet includes flies, ants, moths and spiders.
A small nest is built in the fork of a branch and 2 eggs are laid. The female incubates the eggs and the male feeds the chicks once they hatch. Chicks fledge after 15 days.
