Identification
A mid-sized finch with a black mask, dark olive back, and gold crest. Uniform white underparts. Small white spots above bill and on leading edge of wings.
Sexes alike.
Distribution
South America: found in Ecuador and Peru.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- A. l. leucopterus:
- Andes of western Ecuador (south to Chimbo Valley)
- A. l. dresseri:
- Andes of south-western Ecuador (El Oro and Loja)
- A. l. paynteri: Paynter's Brush Finch
- Northern Peru (northern Piura to Cajamarca border)
Habitat
Lower growth of montane forest and borders between 1000 and 2600m on west slope of Andes.
Behaviour
Diet
Energetic foragers for berries and seeds, often with mixed flocks.
