Identification
16 cm (6¼ in)
Notice the pale base of the mandible. Underparts grey with yellow undertail, upperparts olive. Head is mostly grey with black mask bordered below by white and then black malar stripes, chin and throat grey.
Similar Species
More likely to be mistaken for a Saltator than anything else, but notice the head pattern.
Distribution
South America: found in eastern Colombia to northern Bolivia and south-western Amazonian Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
It is the only member of its genus; is has previously been included in the genus Caryothraustes.
Habitat
In moist lowland forests. At heights between 200–1000 m, though usually occurring below 750 m.
Behaviour
Mainly in canopy, sometimes at forest borders and edge.
Diet
They have been seen feeding in mixed species flocks but their is little information available about their diet, although they are known to eat insects.
