Cuckoos cross Sahara (BTO) (1 Viewer)

Amazing to think it's halfway through July and a bird has not only left but is in subsaharan Africa. Re-inforces how they are African birds that come to Britain to breed.

An ornithological 'Mile-gramme' of achievement!...What next..small neck mounted cameras, to identify invertebrate prey species?

Well done

They really are enthralling stories to read- hard not to become attached to the birds! I wish them the best for the remainder of their journies!

Two more crossed the Sahara from Italy over the past few days - travelling c. 2,500km in just over 2 days. Check out Chris's latest blog - he was last picked up in northern Chad in the most amazing volcanic landscapes.

The project has thrown up really interesting new facts about Cuckoos including the fact these bids left a month (or more) earlier than expected and one bird (Clement) has gone down into West Africa, a migration route we did not know existed. It was thought that W Africa cuckoos were the Iberian race. Apparently not all!

If you can, please sponsor a Cuckoo - it will allow BTO to carry on with such tracking studies and you will get a weekly or so Cuckoo newsletter with a summary of the latest events.
