Hello everybody,

I really need your help. I have a week free that i wasn't supposed to have and i decided to go birding around Berlin. I read lots of posts and birding reports and i'm getting totally confuse.Dont know which place is the Best for me, and i'm leaving on wednesday and need to book art least a hôtel.

So coule you tell me which place would be the Best. Actually, i won't go with a car. So it will be public transports + bike rental. I've got 6 nights, So i'm thinking about picking up two différent nice, homey and cheap hôtels at 2 different places and make day trips from there. What do you think?

I'm quite a new birdwatcher, So i dont have really target species. Sure, i'd like to see white tailed eagle and storks, and great bustards too. But is buckow a nice place to stay 3 nights?
What about the oder valley or greenwald?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my english, it's not that good, and my french computer makes it worse

Nathalie

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the region, so you'll have to wait for other, more knowledgeable German posters to show up (there should be a few on this forum). Generally speaking, Berlin and surroundings offer many good opportunities.
The Oder valley National Park seems to be accessible via public transport (train to Schwedt or Angermünde, and from there it's detailed in the website) http://www.nationalpark-unteres-odertal.eu/index.php/anreisen/
According to the information there and on Wikipedia, it has a lot of bird species, including White-tailed and Lesser Spotted Eagles and Black Stork, so it might be worth a visit.

allô Nathalie!

unfortunately public transport isn't that easy in brandenburg. and the hot summer isn't the best time to see many species there...

it's wednesday - are you still online?

easy to reach, but not in brandenburg:

Karower Teiche
http://www.naturgucker.de/?gebiet=1546015043
S-Bahn station Karow (north-east edge of berlin, ticket "AB" needed)

Stangenhagen hide
http://www.naturgucker.de/?gebiet=2061770823
how to get there from berlin (zoologischer garten):
http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en?ld=0.1&seqnr=2&ident=6i.063681.1406747738&
maybe you like a little walk and visit Körzin, too:
http://www.naturgucker.de/?gebiet=-1970285968
you have to buy a ticket called "ABC" (berlin city and surroundings).
you MUST urgently check the bus table for your way back and be sure you don't miss the bus or you would have to wait a long time or maybe won't get back the same day... the bus is only available from monday to friday.

to get the bustards: train to Nennhausen (deutsche bahn ticket, don't know the price),
http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en?ld=0.1&seqnr=2&ident=d5.0180261.1406748695&
then taxi to that place
http://www.naturgucker.de/?gebiet=1997795053
you should have a scope.
or taxi from Nennhausen to Buschow, where the bustards often can be seen, but the place isn't very interesting beyond that species. just a very small village with a field, to be observed from the main road (in that case binoculars are sufficient.
taxi (maybe the taxi-driver M. Lieck speaks a little english): +493387860221
it would be helpful to arrange that taxi-trip in advance.

white tailed eagles (and many other species) in Gülpe (lake Gülper See):

or
http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en?ld=0.1&seqnr=1&ident=ga.0229641.1406749145&OK#focus
(deutsche bahn ticket, don't know the price)
same thing with the bus like in Stangenhagen!

"unfortunately" my holidays begin in this week. it is very much easier to reach interesting spots by car. but I'm elsewhere...

good luck!

yvonne

Thanks

Yvonne, tanks a lit for all this useful informations. I arrivée today in Berlin. And tomorrow i'm heading north in the Mecklenburg aera where i'll stay 3 days. The i go to brandenbourg and i'm Going to sélect two if the places you're talking about. For sure, without a car, it's not easy. But i'll pick up the easier place to access in public transport...

Cheers,

Nathalie

oh, the public transport links are no longer available.
for the planning of routes with the BVG:
http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/index.html
you can select english.

for Stangenhagen you have to go to Trebbin by train and then take the bus 751.

Gülpe/Prietzen at Gülper See:
RE4 or Re 2 train to Rathenow or Neustadt (Dosse), then bus 684 to Prietzen or to Gülpe. follow the south side of the lake. (around prietzen it's maybe a little tricky to find the right way, ask someone for the direction of Gülpe or the path at the lake.) on the south-west end of the lake (near to Gülpe) there is a tall hide. from that i often have seen white tailed eagles, also walking along the lakeside.

Here is an orientation map for Berlin/ Brandenburg.
My favorit is 2 and 4.
The best is combination public transport and bycicle.
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/FRA/fr/index.shtml

The area are quite big.
Before you reach protected areas from railway station, often you have already defined 30 different kinds of birds.

http://www.bahn.de/i/view/FRA/fr/prices/germany/callabike.shtml

Railway stations for birdwatchers are for example
Nennhausen about 6 km to Great Bstard area
Rathenow about 15 km to lake Guelper See, also called petrol station of migration birds in Central Europe
Bad Wilsnack 4 km to river Havel which is good for water birds and also some migration birds, also possible in combination with lake Guelper See and maybe Nennhausen ( total way 120 km ).

Goetz for lake Rietzer See Streng ( 6km ), good for water birds, somethimes White-tailed Eagle, do not mix it with lake Rietzer See, Rietzer See Streng is a small part with is protected

When You will be in Berlin ?
