As Eagle season is starting up in CT, I figured a trip to East Haddam at the Connecticut River was in order yesterday. Honestly, I didn't expect to spot any. So when I caught glimpse of this adult skimming the river surface below I became quite pleased. She swooped up into the trees at hill side, just a few hundred feet to my northwest. After a quiet and careful trek over the fragile forest floor, I found refuge in wooded clearing with a fallen tree which acted as both a comfortable seat and a makeshift monopod for my 7 lb camera. I sat for an hour in 38F morning air, fingertips growing numb, hoping for a dramatic launch. Although she eventually took off in the opposite direction, I was treated to an extended private glance at one of North America's most beautiful birds of prey.
