Blue-headed Bee-eater

Blue-headed Bee-eater (Merops muelleri)

This small bee-eater is a bit of a nightmare to photograph as it usually keeps high up in the canopy and so getting a decent image can be a challenge.

This bee-eater is a bit of an enigma. It is found in a small relict population in Kakamega forest in Western Kenya but otherwise its eastern limit is the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is likely that the Congo forest once extended east from the Congo basin through Rwanda/Burundi and Uganda to Kenya. When the equatorial rain forest belt shrunk a small relict population of this bird was left stranded in Western Kenya.

A beautiful capture of this rarity to the Gallery and added to Opus with much thanks.

Great shot Steve. What a result to get a some great shots of this bird with nice light, good angle and carrying a bee as well! My view of this bird in Kakamega left much to be desired - obviously I didn't work hard enough!
