Scaled Quail
I'd never seen them in this area before today, I'm guessing females, 2 of them wandered thru
Habitat
high desert
Location
Whetstone AZ
Date taken
Apr 29 06
Scientific name
Callipepla squamata
we're at the foot of the Whetstone mtns about 15 miles N or Sierra Vista. They are common in SE Az, I'd only seen the Gambel's here tho. I'd guess the drought is moving them down the canyons to our area.

Ryan,
Tough to sex this species. For me it's a male. The skinny has that both sexes of this species are similar and that the female differs in having a smaller crest and brown streaks on face and throat.

Thanx cuckoo, you're probably right; what caught my attention initially was the crown that differed from the single 'plume' of the gambel's. something caught its attention and I was able to snap the pic. I'll keep an eye out, hopefully find some more and see a difference. Thanks!
