Great Northern Diver (juvenile)

I think this is probably my best bird of 2011 and a lifer. I have seen many shots on here of GNDs in their breeding plumage, and drooled over how beautiful they are. I never imagined that one would turn up only 30 miles up the road!! This was the result of yesterday morning's outing. We had to wait for 2 hours before the fog lifted and we could see anything but our patience was rewarded with views as close as 10 metres (albeit for only seconds at a time!). Amazing stuff ;)

Slight crop; 300mm (+ extra teleconverter activated) [870mm equivalent]; ISO250; 1/500th shutter; F/8; 0ev
Location
Bucks, UK
Date taken
20 November 2011
Equipment used
Panasonic DMC-G3 with 100-300mm lens
Congrats on you lifer, Hobbes, and on an excellent image. Great detail, reflection, and bird, very well done.

Congrats on your lifer...I still remember my first of this species. Good work Hobbes.

Great capture. Always a nice bird to see. We've had plenty of Red and Black -throated Divers but I've not yet seen a Great Northern this Autumn.

Congrats on a fine newbie Hobbsy, super Loon capture, nice reflect too, well done you.

Excellent bird & lovely reflected image. Congrats on this first, great work & tfs.
