High Plains Drifter

High Plains Drifter (Bucorvus leadbeateri)

A bird that really oozes character.

Family groups of these birds patrol the short grass plains of the Mara walking with a characteristic swagger as they search for large invertebrates, lizards, snakes and small mammals.

Ground Hornbills are painfully slow breeders with an extended study in Kruger NP revealing that the average pair/family group only rears one youngster every nine years. Fortunately they are long-lived when left in peace by humans!
