Northern watersnake (Nerodia sipedon)

Melanistic version of our Northern Water snake. Gene is quite common in water snakes. This one was laying on a paved footpath, soaking up residual warmth. Watched an approaching couple step right over without noticing. app. 8 inch (20cm) long. Been hunting melanistic banded watersnake, very beautiful. No luck so far.

Nicely captured Bill. He seems to be carefully watching what you're up to!

An exceptional capture of this beautiful snake. The colour and markings shown very nicely and is tack sharp. Very well done.

Thanks everyone. Very kind of you all. Little rascal tried to crawl in metal lens hood.
Guess it was too cold, it turned around and took off "running".

Thanks EW. Those list can go a long way keeping us healthy. 100mm focal length too short for anything dangerous.
Hubble space scope just about right for black mambas.
