Young Birder (4 Viewers)

I am a 13 year old, I do work for the rspn and get there phoenix mags and to the person who said birdlife is better, there just wrong! My mum is an rspb member so I read her 'adult' mags. I will say they have got more information in them.

Comming away from rspb do any of you get 'birdwatching' 'go bird watching' or any other just bird mags.

Hi Luke,
Thanks for this response, I found it very interesting. The problem with the magazines was that they were aimed at people at the lower age of the age range. They were of no interest to me, when I used to get them between the ages of 16 to 18. I now get the adult magazine, which is better as it actually focuses on birds.

I used to subscribe to Birdwatching magazine, which is quite good, but stopped as it became repetitive and since I joined birdforum, I do not need it to get the birdwatching news. What exactly do you do for the RSPB, if you do not mind me asking?

Not had a single yeartick this month, getting jealous of everyone seeing all these rarities when i can't twitch anything :-C

Just went through my list, and realised that my total (in an excel document) was missing some birds I have seen this year:
331: Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
332: Nankeen Night Heron
333: Blue-winged Kookaburra
334: Spotted Quail-thrush

Also yesterday I added
335: Yellow-tufted Honeyeater

Hopefully my friend and I will be able to head out on at least one more overnight trip before the year is out, so I'll probably end up around 345, hopefully 350 if I'm lucky ;)

Today Ferruginous Duck as Lifer:) so now 270 on my germany list and 235 on my germany year list:)
Also some other nice birds:
Rough-legged Buzzard,
Goosander,
Smew,
more than 400 Tundra Bean Goose
more than 500 White fronted Goose
more than 600 Greylag Goose

A nice day

I hate these short days! Don't get home from college till after dark so can't get out birding apart from the weekends. Can't wait till Saturday when I can get out looking for local bean geese again...

Me too! Got up early this morning and went to a spot 5 birds had been roosting at for 3 days and there weren't any..... :-C . Black-necked Grebe was nice though. Got my school trousers covered in coal heap slurry too! 8-P

Went out last Sunday (after a tOuch of twitching in northumbs) for the whitefronts at saltholme rspb, which was a reserve tick for me, but didn't get chance to look for the semi-p sand just up the road. I'm hoping to get 250 by the end of the year, but I'm surprised about how many species ive seen this year- a personal record. Hoping for some more shots at some rarities in the next week, as I'm going to hopefully go see the redstart again (loved it!) and try for a great grey shrike on the way up, and possibly dipper up there too. Hoping to get ringing again on Sunday.

Anyone else got any plans for Christmas? I'm heading down to my grandparents, which is reasonable distance from chew lake, slimbridge and Anglesey, so I could get a few year ticks/lifer before the years out. Also, it's near where the azorean yellow legged gulls been seen, so may try for that!
Hope everyone has some good birding over the next few weeks!

Once again failed to see any Bean Geese on Sunday. Spent a few hours searching through several flocks of pink footed geese (found 6 white fronted geese in the process) but couldn't find any bean geese. However when I got home and my parents had gone out I got a text saying someone had just found 2 a few miles from the area I had been searching, damn!

Unlucky Jonny, I too have had White-fronts (but only 4 flying over at the beginning of the influx) but haven't caught up with any Beans either. There's been up to 90 only a couple of miles from home in the last couple of days, went looking for them yesterday but there weren't any where they had been reported. Then when I got home 90 were reported that evening from where I was, was frustrated too! With the strike on Wednesday I have the day off and will be having another look during that morning. Would be great to see loads of both White-fronts and Beans, and will hopefully catch up with some then.

On a more positive note, I had 75+ Waxwings (could have been as many as 90) a few streets away from my house whilst waiting for my girlfriend on Saturday afternoon. Previous to that, I'd had a few over my school on a couple of occasions and had a further two over the school today. Believe 75+ is the highest reported UK total so far, really happy with this and its always fantastic to see Waxies; very privileged to live in a place where I can see them not far from home every year!

Hopefully they will quickly make their way south!
