    ID stuffed parrot

Apparently this fella was brought back from South America in the 1890s, it then died in 1930. Don't know any more than that.

    ID stuffed parrot

Hi all, Bit of a random one. I know this section is for IDs of wild birds, but where can I get a 100 year old stuffed parrot identified?! Don't want to breach rules so I'll wait to get the go-ahead before posting...

New Snake Species in the UK?

Yes maybe you're right. But surely people have written, tweeted etc to correct this? Many have on the twitter feed so the penny must have dropped surely?

New Snake Species in the UK?

It does appear to be a balls up - well, there *is* a new species but they overlap in Germany not here so we still have the 3 species, but our grass snake is the barred grass snake now. You'd have thought the BBC and others would have the decency to correct it rather than just let it slip and...

'Dead cert' species within 5 minutes of leaving your house

Red kite is my best dead cert. Don't need to go 5 minutes or even leave the house, just look out of a window for a few seconds.

    lynx reintroduction

The proposal details here http://www.lynxuk.org/ has been very widely in the mainstream media in recent months There is no problem with the conservation science in Britain and there are plenty of dedicated people. The problem is in the land ownership. These people have huge influence over...

    lynx reintroduction

I don't know, there seems to be some momentum behind this project. But yes, given our history of endless red tape over reintroductions, I'm not holding my breath.

    lynx reintroduction

I think the trials should ease concerns (if it gets that far). Lynx are not opportunists like foxes. They are shy, secretive animals that live in dense woodlands and eat deer. Once people realise that they will be more supportive.

    Forest of Dean boar

400 is a bit more sensible, but its still a drastic level of culling for a species that is only just re-establishing itself. Hopefully a proportion of the excess 600 can spread into new areas rather than simply be culled.

    lynx reintroduction

Its not so much food availability, more habitat. They need large areas of undisturbed forest. Some figures I saw suggested only a handful could live there and that is what I question. If you can't have a self sustaining population, is it worth it? In Northumberland/Cumbria and the Scottish...

Does anyone like me think twitching gives birdwatchers a bad reputation

Thats very interesting. I posted what I did above before reading your post - I've always assumed that the wider public view twitchers with a degree of ridicule, much like they do trainspotters. Maybe I'm mistaken.
