Test: Big scopes vs big lens with the Kenko Lens2scope and Live View

That is an interesting idea mayoayo. I hope there is some possibility of using the nikon modular system for that purpose but I somehow how doubt that would be designed by nikon.

Test: Big scopes vs big lens with the Kenko Lens2scope and Live View

I finally got around to doing a test I have been meaning to do for quite a while. A few years ago I got interested in photography and purchased a Canon 400 mm f/4 DO lens. It's a great camera lens and because of the DO technology its quite light--about 2 kg. Because I often take walks to get to...

Here are the new modular Swarovski scopes

An interesting experiment, thanks. I will try it.

Here are the new modular Swarovski scopes

I wonder, in regards, to Kimmo's and Henry's response above whether for most birding situations in terms of useable detail visable, it would be better to have the Nikon 82 at 75x or the Kowa 883 at 60x provided both were both excellent specimens? I use the Nikon 82 at 75x when atmospheric...

    Canon 8d

It's not just the us amateurs who want better autofocus at f/8. Imagine you have the 800mm f/5.6 and Canon ID Mark IV and want to use 1.4x teleconverter. It will only autofocus at the center focus point. I think most people would want all focus points to work.

    Canon 8d

Here are some things I would like to see in order of importance: In-body Image Stabilization. Come on Canon, Pentax, Sony and Olympus have this in their bodies--don't be left behind! I realize IS in the lens is better but for old lenses or those wide to normal L zooms this would be a real...

    Canon 400mm f/4 DO vs 300mm f/2.8

I wonder type of image quality you can get with 300mm f/2.8 and stacked teleconverters? Must be pushing it to it's limit.

    Canon 400mm f/4 DO vs 300mm f/2.8

I am curious whether any one has compared the 300mm f/2.8 (IS or non-IS) with a 2x teleconverter to a 400mm f/4 DO lens with 1.4x teleconverter. As both lenses would approximately 600mm and f/5.6 I am wondering how they would compare in terms of optical quality and auto-focus speed. I know the...

New EDG zoom for Fieldscope 82

As a long time user of a Nikon 82ED Fieldscope I have long wished for a wide angle zoom to rival the Zeiss, Swarovski, and Leica zooms. Am I right in saying, now that the EDG Fieldscopes are arriving it looks like the new zoom for that scope will not fit the old Fieldscopes? Has anybody...

    Vortex Viper vs. Razor?

Recently, I had chance to compare my father's Vortex Diamondback 10x42 to by Leica 10x42 BN. I have to say the Diamondback's performance for $200 is increadible so I think either of the high priced models must perform quite well indeed. Brendan

    review of gitzo 1298 tripod

Gitzo advertises that it feels warmer in cold weather and does not heat up as much in warm weather. I have not tried it in cold weather. In warm weather and bright sun it does heat up some but is certainly no worse than aluminum but less than wood. I don't have a carbon fiber pod for...

    review of gitzo 1298 tripod

Recently I had been searching for a small travel tripod for use with a 82 mm angled Nikon Fieldscope. A year ago or so I started using a Berlebach 3022 tripod for general birding. This was much more stable than my Manfrotto 3022 (055) aluminum. However, it weighted about 4.5 kilograms with...

    Best Travel Tripod

I am looking to buy a tripod to complement my larger Berlebach Wood Tripod. There would be two uses: for travel and for birding when I would have to carry my scope long distances. So I am looking for something light and compact. I use an angled scope so height is not terribly important...

    Big Scopes

Thanks for everyones very interesting comments. It seems from everyones comments that 85-100 mm refractors can give the best possible view. Unfortunately they are to my mind specialty scopes due to their weight, size, lack of weatherproofing and reversed field of view. For a cost of well...

    Big Scopes

I have a Nikon Fieldscope 82 EDa which I think is really excellent in terms of optics and handling. However, there are many times when I feel scopes in the 77-85 mm range are at their limits. So I have four questions: 1) Steve Ingram has suggested in some situations (heat shimmer, fog) a...
