Old topic I am sure but new to me - Kerala houseboat birding

Mike, I was there 18 months ago and am going back in 2018. Andre is right about the houseboat, nice way to see the common birds. We used Kalypso Travel in Kerala. Organised through MotMot and Wild about Travel in the UK. I would recommend all of these. The Kalypso guide was excellent...

Lumix LX3 with Nikon ED82A scope

Yes is the answer. Worked well with my Opticron. It is the eyepiece size that is relevant rather than the scope. I attached mine by buying the 52 mm adapter tube that screws on the front; make sure you get the type with a deep front end. Cut a piece of standard plumbing pipe into about an...

    Feathers collection

MJB Don't forget the law goes further: "a person shall not be guilty of an offence under subsection (2) if he shows that—. (a) the bird or egg had not been killed or taken, or had been lawfully killed or taken (b) the bird, egg or other thing in his possession or control had been lawfully...

Are bird names supposed to be written in capital letters?

Right from an early age I was told that grammatically lower case is correct. Apart from when there is a proper name etc (Canada goose). But I have given up the argument a long time ago and just go with the majority and use Capitals.

Complaints against the RSPB rejected (RSPB)

Whilst certain papers were very quick to highlight the complaints against the RSPB they have been silent on highlighting the outcome. This weekend the MoS again referred to these complaints in an article about shooting and made no reference at all to the fact that the complaints had been...

    Kites in Wiltshire

Delia Silbury Hill is taking you away from the main population. You will see them there but try the road from Marlborough to Ramsbury or Mildenhall next time (for those in Cambridgeshire this Mildenhall is pronounced 'Mynall' - honestly).

    Kites in Wiltshire

Hello, Not everyone is from Irag and there are some on here closer to home so keep visiting. Red Kites are increasing in Wiltshire and spreading west and southwards. They will be spreading mainly as generations grow from the Chiltern re-introductions of many years ago. You can roughly...

    low power microscope

Steve, Depending on what you are wanting to use it for, but I have just downloaded a microscope/magnifier app for the mobile phone and my tablet. I used it today whilst out looking for Brown Hairstreak eggs and was reasonably impressed with the result. I am going to try and set it up...

Any Advice Nikon D80 or D5000

I have the D80 and there is nothing wrong with it and it is a superb camera. I do agree with the others that it is an older generation camera and at your stage I would certainly try for the latest camera you can get for your money. That should be faster than the D80. I would also consider...

    I.D request of Kerala Bird

Thanks. There were blue capped rock thrush in the area. I will have a look. To be fair to the guide we weren't on a birding tour and he just happened to be an amateur birdwatcher learning a new hobby so we went for a walk. He knew where to find birds but was open about not being an expert.

    I.D request of Kerala Bird

This bird was seen in Kerala, near Munnar, about 2 weeks ago. We were watching a group of small birds (mainly flycatchers) in a woody area and I saw this bird. Our guide stated it could be Brown Flycatcher but I am uncertain. To be fair there were so many birds he could have been looking at...

    Cryptic Crossbird Clue

A 'Gull' is a person who has been cheated. Black headed gull fits but I don't know why.

    Small "clicking" bird

Yes, you are right. I got confused because it does appear in some North American field guides but only because it is a rarity in Alaska.

    Small "clicking" bird

Have you tried looking at Stonechat song and call. Makes a sound like stones clacking together. I think you get them in USA. Although my definition of robin sized will be different to yours
