Can these skills be learned by spending time in the field or do they come naturally? Did the 'good birder' gene die out in the 1980's? Why do so many birders I've met with 'impressive' lifelists have such loud voices? Why have I met so few experienced birders who have contributed...
Good question. I recently made a decision not to twitch and not to purchase top-end optics- I don't own a scope and I don't want one....yet- I'm not ready. Personally I want to familiarise myself with the commoner species I'm likely to see every day on my patch, and to be able to recognise all...
Heard an interesting story this morning from another birder about an area now devoid of Cuckoos. Apparently their main hosts were YW's and as a result, Yellow wags declined to the extent that there are now no Cuckoos.
Interested to hear any thoughts on this.....

I DO think that he is being given some dodgy material to work with though. The BBC Wildlife production budget can't be very much then........not much in the ideas department either.
