    To be a good birder

Tim, Can these skills be learned by spending time in the field or do they come naturally? Did the 'good birder' gene die out in the 1980's? Why do so many birders I've met with 'impressive' lifelists have such loud voices? Why have I met so few experienced birders who have contributed...

    To be a good birder

Good question. I recently made a decision not to twitch and not to purchase top-end optics- I don't own a scope and I don't want one....yet- I'm not ready. Personally I want to familiarise myself with the commoner species I'm likely to see every day on my patch, and to be able to recognise all...

    Cuckoo parasitising Yellow Wagtail?

Heard an interesting story this morning from another birder about an area now devoid of Cuckoos. Apparently their main hosts were YW's and as a result, Yellow wags declined to the extent that there are now no Cuckoos. Interested to hear any thoughts on this..... Rgds

The clock that wakes you when you are ready

Could be a tempting purchase for birders....... From The New Scientist 14 April 2005 NewScientist.com news service Emily Singer writes ARE you a real grump in the mornings? Do you wake up every day feeling tired, embittered, aggrieved, and all too ready to hit the snooze button? If...

Bill Oddie - are we getting too much of a good thing ?

Very well put. I DO think that he is being given some dodgy material to work with though. The BBC Wildlife production budget can't be very much then........not much in the ideas department either. Keep going Bill, just kick the producers up the arse once in a while.;)

    Twitching- Added Value

I'll start by mentioning I've never been on a twitch per se.;) I imagine this must have happened some time. (the Titchwell redpolls?) You and several hundred others are twitching a rarity- amongst those several hundred are some of the finest birders in the country. With such a...

So sorry Pete. Could have got you all of those on Saturday. 2 of our party saw the Buzzard .Unfortunately, you weren't one of them. Regarding the other 3, I seem to remember rumbling stomachs/dry lips intervening. Not to mention me not being able to find a site! Still missing Peregrine...

    Bird to match this sound

Hi deadasadodo, Can you give any further information? Was it; fluty or whistling, trilling? Soft, harsh? Rythmic, jerky? Fast, slow? Was the bird really vocalising a 'D' sound? I'm intrigued. Hope you find out what it was. Regards
