Finches eating me out of house & home!

I was thinking of a window feeder rather than another tube, but I'd probably have the same problem of waste. If it doesn't work, I'll use the tray for something else and try the sock approach. Thanks for the suggestions. By the way, in the two or three months since I've been feeding, I haven't...

Finches eating me out of house & home!

I'm just getting started at feeding birds. My tube feeder holds about a pint - pint and a half (.5 - .75 L, roughly) of seed. when I first put up the feeder my visitors were mostly Tufted Titmice and Black-capped Chicakdees, plus a few nuthatches. I would refill the feeder every few days. As...

    mealworm - live?

I've thought about live mealworms but I want to put them in a window feeder, next to a tray of thistle. Don't I have to worry about the mealworms crawling out of the tray and through the cracks in the woodwork and into the house? That would be sort of a dealbreaker...

    Squirrels/birds/hot pepper

There's one just up the street. WBU also liked the hot pepper suet, but said that squirrels would also avoid plain suet (no seeds or peanuts or anything). Maybe that's the stuff you used that melts in the heat? Dave

    Squirrels/birds/hot pepper

I guess it's a never-ending fight. However, since I spiced up the cord holding the feeder, squirrel invasions have dropped to zero. I am assuming that the cayenne on the vertical sections has helped cut down the attacks from that angle. However, I believe that the critters have just given up...

    Squirrels/birds/hot pepper

That's great. The birds seem to be used to it now. But if it doesn't keep the squirrels away, what's the point? Not sure I understand how they tolerate it -- this stuff keeps ME away!

    Squirrels/birds/hot pepper

Hi, I have a "squirrel proof" feeder that has been working well for several months. Today, however, I went out to fill it, and noticed that a squirrel or squirrels have clawed their way up the side of the house, and gnawed nearly clean through the nylon rope holding the feeder. I had heard...

    Feeder abandoned?

Funny you should suggest those things. I cleaned the birdbath and the feeder just the other day, and the birds seem to be returning -- slowly, but surely. Thanks for the suggestions!

    Feeder abandoned?

I've been enjoying my new feeder for the last month or two, getting regular visits from chickadees, titmice, goldfinches and the occasional chipping sparrow. All of a sudden, in the last day or two, there have been no birds either on the feeder or in the nearby stand of small, leafy trees. I've...

    Simple non rare pleasures-your experiences

    1. My first sighting of a hundred or so Northern Gannets dive-bombing for fish, off Nauset Beach on Cape Cod. 2. The annual return of the Eastern Phoebes who inhabit the nest above my porch light. 3. Seeing any warbler anywhere -- always a pleasant, bright and colorful surprise!

I'm glad dolphinbride mentioned Veery, I'm partial to that one myself. Also the Eastern Wood Pewee.
