    Where to go in October?

Hi, Every october half term i go somewhere with my parents as a primarily birding holiday. Usually we go to Norfolk, however due to the appalling weather this summer, and my dad being a non birder, i would like advice on somewhere in the mediterrannean to go where the weather is likely to be...

    greenshank or lesser yellowlegs

Can someone please explain to me why that wouldn't be a wood sand, as to me that looks like a possibility. Am probably being a right idiot and missing something obvious, and in which case sorry. My excuse is i'm still young... Robbie

    Help with a Raptor please!

On jizz and habitat alone that sound like a pretty sure sparrowhawk, although still a very impressive bird from 5m away. Robbie

Long Island, NY Thrush/Sparrow ID please

Although i am only a humble british youngster, the white eye ring and reddish tail make it sound like a pretty certain hermit thrush to me. Robbie

    ring necked duck

Although rarely visable in the field, the male does have an inconspicuous purplish ring around its neck. This is shown vaguely in a picture at: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Ring-necked_Duck.html

    Little Egret in Rio Harbour

Yup i agree. Not Little Egrets as they have dark bills and yellow feet. That looks like a Great White egret to me too. Robbie

So how is your 2007 list going?

I got the Ring Necked today, was showing very well from the path round the back of the oasts, however got rather covered in mud getting to it. I think i may have a go at the Fudge duck if this wind slows up a bit, as i have to rely on cycling there.

So how is your 2007 list going?

Didn't get out till about 2.30 due to having to have drinks with the neighbours, and following this i had to decide whether to do Knole Park or Bough Beech. Picked the former, and later regretted it, with the report of a Ring Necked Duck at Bough Beech, a lifer (nice way to start a year), all i...

Please give Never and always birding advice.

Never stand directly under a tree full of starlings, and then look up. Always make sure you have something with you with which to clean lenses of Bins/scope.

Is it ? I hope so......

From my very limited knowledge i would agree with you. I'm fairly sure that it is a Dowitcher, and Long Billed seemed to fit the bill, due to the more patterned back than would be shown with the Short Billed, which in the literature that i have, says it looks like winter plumaged Knot. I don't...
