    Latest IOC Diary Updates

But as we know David Donkser reads this thread, isn't feedback from those with specialised knowledge useful to the IOC's decision making process?

How do you keep your lifelist, and what is included?

I used to keep mine on paper sheets but as the list grew keeping track of splits and lumps became difficult and untidy. I bought my 1st laptop in 1995 and immediately purchased the Wildlife Recorder program, it took two years of work lunch breaks to enter all the sightings (there are over...

    Green Woodpecker

The British Ornithologist's Union use the IOC List as the basis for the British List, so if you have recorded birds in the UK you've recorded them under BOU taxonomy. It would sense in my opinion to continue to use the IOC taxonomy when abroad.

    Clements 2023 Checklist Update

On the subject of egret splits would anyone like to comment on whether three 'Intermediate Egrets' seen in Oman in October would most likely be the African 'Yellow-billed' or the Asian 'Medium Egret'. I presume that an 'Intermediate Egret' seen on Christmas Island in September could safely be...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Many thanks for this, I've just returned from Angola and checked the IOC website and was really struggling to make out which forms I had seen and hadn't seen until I looked at Bird Forum and saw your post. Five out of the eight for me, so four armchair ticks. Shame I missed it on Palawan

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Assuming no last minute surprises, of the c 61 changes, 34 affect me with 14 losses and 20 gain so six more on the life list. I'm particularly pleased with the chaffinch, Lesser Sandplover and Cockatoo splits and with the Western Flycatcher lump. The others I'm ok with either way

    Inaccessible bird species

Birdquest have repeatedly tried to get Afghan Snowfinch and Long-billed Reed Warbler on the list. As far as I know the first attempt (which was fully booked) was cancelled when the only available aircraft was taken out of service. They could have driven but that was exceptionally unsafe. The...

    Inaccessible bird species

Yes, but I believe the orientation of the runway means that flights can easily be cancelled due to wind. The 1st test flight in had difficulty landing! Quite a few Helena Plover territories were destroyed to build the runway but I think other areas were returned to plover friendly habitat to...

    Inaccessible bird species

The Birdquest 'life list' which consists of all the species seen by paying customers over all their trips during the last 42 years stands at around 10,650. So it's not surprising that no single observer has seen more than 9856 (as of June 2023)
