Hawthorn Fly - Bibio marci ?

Spine on front tibia means it's definitely Bibio. Looks good for marci.

    What was your most embarrasing....''string''

Once called a heron as a hen harrier on the Somerset Levels. Then about an hour later, still smarting from my mistake, called a hen harrier as a heron. Some days it feels like you should just pack up & go home.

Looks like they might be. You may want to check with these guys for more up to date info.

    Snail Question

I think a couple of garden snails is a much better idea than the African Land Snails. Some soil in the bottom of the tank, a couple of slates to hide under and (important) a lid should be all you need. Lettuce & other kitchen scraps may suffice, they do like chicken feed as well. Enjoy!

    Climate Change Denial

...and in other news Hitler was a vegetarian & Anders Breivik quoted Steve McIntyre in his 'manifesto'. If anyone was wondering what ad hominum meant then the Heartland Institute poster is a perfect encapsulation of its definition. Meanwhile, more blog science.

Amazon under renewed threat from Big Agri-Business

Agreed, and also a scenario likely replicated with the corn-oil in the Amazon & elsewhere. In both cases there is a bait-and-switch, getting people to rail against (eg) the "biofuel scam" whilst missing the true target.

Amazon under renewed threat from Big Agri-Business

Aren't most palm oil plantations set up for producing 'vegetable oil' for food production rather than for biofuel?

    Help stop Green Waste

Other than the assertion of the author of the petition is there any evidence that farmers are "having their land contaminated with plastic, aluminium, glass and all kinds of other products, containing chemicals and substances"? I'm guessing that if it was the case it would already be...

    Flying insect- Cork, Ireland

Most likely Bibio marci, other species are possible but aren't usually seen in such large numbers (Dilophus febrilis being the exception but that species is much smaller). The early date is a feature of 2012 entomology it appears, with butterflies, moths & aphids (among other groups) all with...
