    John's Mammals 2017

Beavers near Blairgowrie A quick blog on Beavers (plus Otter) near Blairgowrie, Tayside, Scotland, last week: http://www.jameslowen.com/blog-7-aug-2017-beaver.html We went with Bob Smith, who now charges (a very reasonable) £50/group. He also has a Pine Marten hide available - £100, seven...

    Biscay ferries

BUMP... Has anyone done the Biscay trip recently? If so, I'm keen to know which of the two sailing options (see below, taken from Brittany Ferries website) gives you the longest time over deep water. Presumably the Sunday (evening departure) - as it was in the previous incarnation of the trip...

    2017 UK orchids

They were there last year, Roy. My only visit this year was for five mins too early in the season, but I've no reason to doubt they aren't there again. James

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Brown Argus in my New Costessey garden today. (Also Painted lady.) Former a major surprise - of the level of Silver-washed Frit & Wall which have also graced in the garden since 2014. Odd!

    John's Mammals 2017

Belgian Bowhead Has anyone gone for the Belgian Bowhead? And connected? One well-known mammal watcher narrowly dipped, despite fortuitously being in N France as the news broke yesterday and haring to the site. I can't do today/Mon, but if it is seen again tomorrow, I'll go Mon night if anyone...

    Norfolk mammals

Recent polecats/polecat-alikes Today I found the attached roadkill mustelid on the edge of Norwich at the A1074/A47 junction. looks a good candidate for polecat (e.g. front paws at least are dark). Unfortunately, key particulars were squashed. This follows recent roadkill polecats on the A1067...

    Twitchable Eurasian Lynx, Estonia

Eurasian Lynx successfully twitched yesterday by one person who went out to the same site as me, using details as per my blog/Mammalwatching trip report.

    Norwich Birding

A gaggle of Norwich birders were listening outside their houses, pubs, universities last night, producing a fair assembly of nocturnal migrants (invismig). I think the tally included Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, possible Gadwall, Moorhen, Water Rail, Ringed Plover, Curlew, Green Sandpiper, Redshank...

    Twitchable Eurasian Lynx, Estonia

Not the case. The female and three cubs have been followed for several weeks and are using a small area. The site is such that each time the cats move more than several 100 m they have to cross a drivable track. If that track is covered in snow (as at present), they leave fresh prints. Find the...

    Twitchable Eurasian Lynx, Estonia

Cracking news, Rich! Two bites at the cherry: get to Estonia, try both sites, see Eurolynx. Game on!

Info request: Water Deer in Cambridgeshire.

Yep, Mark is bang on. A few years back, I did a piece for BBC Wildlife on Woodwalton's CWD, and saw quite a few easily shortly before dusk (but not during the main period of the day). James

    Twitchable Eurasian Lynx, Estonia

Slipped on ice and landed on my Canon gear, shearing one lens in two and wrecking another and a body (not just mine)! A quick blog done which summarises other mammals and birds seen: http://www.jameslowen.com/blog-7-mar-2017-the-lynx-effect-2.html
