    Where about in Nethy ?

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Red-necked Grebe averages just one or two records a year in the whole of Highland region, so pretty rare. Slavonian and Little Grebes are both regular at that site however.

Are you 100% on the Red-necked Grebe at Merkinch? Very unusual record.

    RFI Black-headed Bunting Highland.

I'm trying to contact the finder of a Black-headed Bunting photographed and posted to social media in June, the name of the account is Emlyn D Hicks. If anyone can help please email me at [email protected] Many Thanks.

Is 2021 a good pine-cone year on Speyside or a poor one?

All just guesswork I'm afraid. They are about, but not that easy to locate at the moment for sure.

Capers in the Scottish Highlands 26 April - 1 May 2021

One theory is when numbers are low and it doesn’t find other male Capers to join in a lek, so diverts it’s energy to this behaviour on anything it sees. Or possibly just genetic, a product of inbreeding perhaps which again is happening as numbers are low. Whatever it’s regularly seen, not just...

    Scotland in late august

You'd struggle to do Nethy to Iona in day though ! It's a long slow road down the Ross plus ferries. Could I just add here that I appreciate it's meant to be helpful info, but you are publicising a couple of quite sensitive Schedule One breeding sites on a public forum that are very...

    Scotland in late august

I agree, especially as in August it's going to be absolutely heaving with slow moving Campers. You really need some decent time on Iona also. I'd base on Mull/Oban to do Iona in a day definitely.

    Black Duck at Strontian, Argyll

It was last reported on 5th January though we've been in lockdown since then so doubt it's been looked for by many.

Unfortunate news: WildWings apparently will be no more...

Only for reasons such as family or business I'd think. There are still some big gaps in data which are needed, 1. How long does the vaccine actually remain effective, 2) How much does it reduce transmission as you can still carry Covid. Until these are known I can't see things changing much.

Unfortunate news: WildWings apparently will be no more...

Realistically, after recent announcements I can't see the international travel market opening up at all in 2021 sadly. Quarantine is going to remain in place for a long time as nobody knows yet how much the vaccine reduces transmission. Sad times and they probably won't be the last. I can't even...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

It was just seen over two days though likely it had been there longer. It was just felt that it would be inappropriate to have any further people gathering at that very public location for obvious reasons. Lucky you were passing !!
