Do you care what you look like when birding?

I don't really care what I look like when I'm not bird watching, so bird watching has no chance. I'm finding rigger boots warm, comfy and waterproof this year.

Which (if any) Porro would you consider an "Alpha" ?

I've Nikon 8x42 HG purchased new (not by me) in the year 2000 for £1000 and the view, wonderful as it is, is eclipsed by the view through my 8x32 SEs (500xxx serial) which I believe date from around 1998 (i.e. pre eco-glass). If you can live with lack of waterproofing and I think you will have...

Once you have Alpha you can never Backa?

I happily mix and match my 8x42 HGs with some DDR Zeiss and Opticron 8x42HR. Bins is bins, weight is important in an all-day walk and in the evening wildlife forays I find I can either take the camera + Zeiss or the HGs. My eyesight is not sharp unaided even in the near distance so any bin...

    Zoom H1

Thanks for the review of the H1. As time and funds permit I hope to record some wildlife sounds as well so these reviews etc are very helpful!

    no video for Dartford Warbler

It's certainly not a common warbler here in the UK, although we are right at the edge of its viable breeding range. I believe in the 1960's we were down to about 10 pairs in the UK. Fortunately their habitat is being well-managed and the numbers have picked up. I'm surprised there's no video...

    Help with binoculars plz

I would say there's no right or wrong. I use 8x as I can't hold 10x still enough but you might be different. I think it's true that most people would recommend 8x in the first instant, but that doesn't mean you have "the wrong ones". Try them, and if they are a good make as you say, you'll move...

Lost Land of the Tiger camera traps

I've had some good quality shots during the day. I think the sensor's quite capable and the lens reasonable. 8M gives you a lot of pixels to be able to crop into and still see detail. Thanks for the light diffuser frost gel link by the way!

Lost Land of the Tiger camera traps

I've been using one for a couple of weeks. I think your IR pool of light is a little lower in the picture and a bit more pronounced than mine. I bought the XLT with the viewer which is incredibly useful for lining up the camera. I've tried cutting out a diffuser from a tupperware box in the...

    Bins magnification

I use 8x for field of view and holding steady. Last year I bought some secondhand Nikon HGs from the year 2000. They are the pre-lightweight models. Purchase price then was £1000, I bought them for £300 in excellent condition. The view is sensational. I'd follow the classifieds really closely...

    glasses wearing beginner photographer

I can't use any of my kit with my glasses on and hate balancing them on the top of my head. What sort of camera do you have?

    nikon 300 F4 AFS or f2.8 AF

I use the f4 with a 1.4x TC and I think its brilliant, you should be very pleased with it!

Changing my Sigma 500mm to a walkabout lens.

I was always of a mind that the 80-400 was the ideal travel lens with its versatile range, VR and relatively compact size. I use an 18-200 which is a brilliant general purpose lens just not enough reach for wildlife, also 300mm f4 and 1.4x convertor which again is a brilliant combination for...

    Looking for a new 300 or 400mm lens for a D90

I use a Nikon 300mm f4 AFS + 1.4TC and the results are spectacular. I always wondered how professional photographers managed to get the "wow" factor into fairly mundane-looking subjects. I also like the 300mm/420mm flexibility. I wouldn't part with my 300 or TC for the world.

    lens for Nikon D80

Just to clarify, I was referring to the Nikon 70-300, not the Sigma.
