    Id Help Corpus Christi TX

Seconded, Tennessee and Red-eyed. Good to see the Neotropicals coming back. It's still snowing here in the northern tier states...

    Shorebirds Corpus Christi TX

I don't see any reason why #1 isn't a Pectoral. Why do you think the bill looks wrong?

Small Mystery Bird - Puerto Rico

How is the bird doing? I don't know nearly as much as I could wish about the identification of young birds either. Is Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis possible where you live?

Small Mystery Bird - Puerto Rico

The best thing you could do for this baby bird is to place it back outdoors on a tree branch. If the parents are around, they are likely to find it and feed it even if it's no longer at the nest. If the bird is begging at you, you could try offering dog kibble soaked in water until it's a...

    Frog/toad ID - Maryland, USA

The wartiness and slender-bodied "acris" shape suggests a Cricket Frog to me. I live in the middle of the continent where the Cricket Frogs don't show until May or June, but I am betting your spring is considerably more advanced than ours is, and no doubt your frogs are on different schedules...

    Chennai, India heron

Thanks, Portnoy58. Are some Chinese/Javan pond-herons similarly dramatically colored in late summer? I'm assuming those might be the species you see.

Songbird, Sea Ranch/Gualala area, California, USA

Nice work getting that flight shot! The bright bird appears to be siskin-shaped and streaked below, so it's my guess that it's a very brightly marked pine siskin. The touch of yellow on the rump does make me wonder about Eurasian siskin as a remote possibility but I have no experience with...

This is a male House Sparrow, Passer domesticus.

    Chennai, India heron

I was searching Google for images of Purple Heron when I saw this photo of a heron from Chennai. It's "heron with purple on it", not Ardea purpurea. I'm guessing it must be Indian Pond Heron Ardeola grayii with some wear and fading going on.

Birds of North America and Greenland

I haven't seen the book itself, and judging by online reviews, I won't buy it. Many of the illustrations I've seen online range from "off" to "very wrong"; Cory Gregory's review includes an owl plate which honestly had me scratching my head for a moment as to what was that thing to the right of...

    Scratching my head

Weird! It looks like a Pine Warbler with a seriously deformed bill to me. Does it seem to be eating all right?

    hello on a morning -11 degrees C

Thanks, KC. I hope the birds are treating you well. You know you live up in icebox country when the juncos migrate south of you for the winter--I just saw a small flock in town and am hoping they'll stick around for the Christmas Bird Count.

    snowy owl irruption

This is a significant irruption, not only in "Minnesota, Michigan, and North and South Dakota" which typically host at least a few Snowy Owls every winter, but owls are being seen south into Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Wyoming, and Kansas. I cannot blame the madison.com article for...

    N. America Snowy Owl invasion map

I was browsing local patch forums and noticed NDhunter's and birdwithme's posts about Snowy Owls in North America this fall. Anyone interested in this fall/winter's invasion of Snowys in N. America should check out this article and map from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Got Snowies?

    Snowy Owls

Did you see any Snowys? I heard that there had been at least one in the Leelanau peninsula area.
