101 Curious Tales of East African Birds

In my spare time over the last couple of years I have finally managed to produce a book that I think readers here might enjoy! It contains 101 short essays (about 300 words each) inspired by 101 East African Birds. It's not a field guide, and it's not a text book, but instead contains all the...

    Mallorca 2016

Lower winds seemed to bring out all the migrants today at S'Albufera! Highlight a red-throated pipit around the back, but more willow warblers than you can shake a stick at, among them several wood and at least one Western Bonelli's, and a gull-billed tern dropped in briefly too, plus the first...

    Mallorca 2016

I'm here again with the group from the University of York and we've been seeing a few bits and pieces, though nothing too exciting. Yesterday we saw a rather early (I thought) collared pratincole at S'Albufereta, and a nice wood warbler among many willows at S'Albufera. Today I was mainly...

Temminck's Stint also at S'Albufera yesterday, with more curlew sands and dunlin than recently. Wood warblers still coming through and a very late common chiffchaff singing briefly. The golden eagle also turned up again in the last couple of days, not sure where she's been hiding!

    Mallorca 2015

On the other hand it felt like a bit of a clear out at S'Albufera! Only obviously new migrant was a melodious warbler.

    Mallorca 2015

Thanks Martin! Another good day today, with the obvious highlight of 2 white-winged terns, plus still at least 3 collared pratincoles and an apparent increase in little stints and curlew sands. Two spotless starling around also, plus one lapwing finally making the list for this year!

    Mallorca 2015

More migrants today: four collared pratincoles the highlight, but more wood warblers and woodchats than previously to, plus Eleanora's becoming more obvious. Even a white wagtail! Any ideas why moustached warblers may be getting scarcer in the parc in recent years? Or just my imagination?

    Mallorca 2015

Yesterday's highlights were three slender billed gulls and now two avocets. Otherwise apparently little turnover at S'Albufera. Though the previously obvious Garganey are now hiding away somewhere...

    Mallorca 2015

Pied fly, woodchat and assortment of waders today at S'Albufera (avocet and curlew sands both arrived yesterday). Spotless starling just near S'Albufereta. The list creeps up!

    Mallorca 2015

Yes, there's a good chance that was us, and yes, from York. All the sightings I gave were from Cùber, and forgot a tawny pipit there too. From now on we're mainly at Albufera. Yesterday we saw our first Eleanora's falcon of the trip and a good range of waders while learning distance sampling...

    Mallorca 2015

cuber reservoir yesterday I'm currently here with a group of students, just noticed this. We have had some good birds in recent days, will try and keep up! Yesterday we saw lots of the expected species (more black vultures than I'd imagined by some order of magnitude!), but both black and red...

Great Reed Warbler ??? and sparrow . Lebanon , middle east.

There's only one record of Clamerous that I know of in Lebanon (at Aammiq some years ago) and I looked very hard for a couple fo years. I'm sure they are there though! From the degree to which the bird beds the tip of the reed it has to be reed on body mass alone?

    African Hornbill - which one?

agreed. Trumpeter are mostly eastern here, only rarely making it as far inland as Arusha (though I don't know where you shot this one!).

    Which Nightjar ?? Ethiopia.

OK, I'm thinking Plain is an option too - it's not a bird I know well at all - I've never had a daylight view for a start! But yes, the lack of head markings are all wrong for european, and work much better for plain.
