    Thoughts re: the RSPB

I have been having similar thoughts for a while now. After finding out that RSPB are pulling out of Elmly after 30 years, and being told that it will allow them to concentrate on Rainhaim Marshes as a replacement, I went and had a look at Rainham. There is no way, on any level, that Rainham...

    RSPB leaving Elmley

I know this has been rumoured for years and sorry if it is old news on here, but I had it confirmed today that the RSPB are pulling out of Elmley at the end of the year. I do not know if it is because the owner will not renew the lease or whether RSPB do not want to renew. Sad after 40 years...

    Planting for wildlife

Yes, they will self seed, but you will need to dig the ground over as they both need the soil to be disturbed to germinate.

    Planting for wildlife

Both poppy and cornflower are annuals. You'll probably get a good show in the first year, but they tend to fade away in future years unless you re-sow each year.

    Planting for wildlife

Pulmunaria (Lungwort) is great for early flowers for early bees. Comfrey is also great for bees & moths. Marjoram / Origano great for almost any necter loving insect. Pyrocathus is a good small and attractive shrub; lots of flowers in the spring, berries in the autumn and all year cover being...

    Re-introductions.

This is the ideal solution, but species such as some of the moths and butterflies we were working on were notorious for their sedentary nature. You could have created all the suitable habitat you wanted but they would never reach it. Where we could we created links between sites so they could...

    Re-introductions.

Having worked as a contractor for English Nature's Species Recovery Program on moth and butterfly re-introductions it works quite well with that type of species. Most of the work involves restoring and improving habitiat so that it is suitable for the target species. As these habitats tend to...

    Flamingos killed in Spain

My Spanish is none existant, so can't read the text. Interested to know how the heavy rain killed them.

    ruddy duck.

Just add to what Barred Wobbler stated, Red Squirrel's 'perfered' habitat is deciduous woodland, but can cope with coniferous woodland, whereas Greys struggle. Hence Reds hanging on in areas of pine forest.

    query type of dove

It's a Collared Dove. Were the photos taken in the rain? I think the silver speckles on the back are rain drops.

    2 flowers - ID please

It would make identification much easier if you showed the whole plant, not just the flowers. It would also be useful to show an image of the plants where they are growing; they are nice photos of the flowers but make it impossible to judge size. The habitat or soil type they are growing in...

    Help Completing UK List

Stodmarsh next spring might be an idea. Oodles of Hobby, far from unusual to see 20+ and one is almost guarenteed to drift nicely over head. Also there are loads of Cetti although very hard to see, and Turtle Dove is usually around. Good for Garden Warbler & Lesser Whitethoat. May still be...
