Identification
Length 48-50 cm
Grey body, white neck, bare black face, grey crest and tail, black legs and feet.
Male has black bill; female has green.
Distribution
Africa
Western Africa: Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi
Taxonomy
There are two subspecies:[1]
- C. p. personatus - Ethiopia
- C. p. leopoldi - Southern population; southern Uganda to northern Zambia
Habitat
Open country, frequenting trees along river courses; also cultivted areas with trees.
Behaviour
Often seen in small groups.
Diet
The diet includes berries.
Vocalisation
A deep kow kow.
Breeding
Nests are built mostly in tall acacia trees; 2-3 greenish-white oval eggs are laid.
