Zosterornis hypogrammicus

Identification

14 - 15cm.

  • Dull orange-buff crown with dark markings at nape
  • Dull buffy mid-grey head side to nape
  • Olive-green upperparts
  • Chin and throat whitish-buff to yellowish-grey
  • Breast and belly olive-yellow with bold black streaks

Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

Endemic to Palawan in the Philippines where found on Mount Mantaling and Mount Borangbato.
Restricted-range species but common in its range.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.
May form a superspecies with Luzon Striped-Babbler, Negros Striped-Babbler and Panay Striped-Babbler.
Like other Striped Babblers from the Philippines formerly placed in genus Stachyris.

Habitat

Montane evergreen forest. Found at 1000m to 2030m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects, takes also seeds and vegetable matter.
Forages at all levels but mainly in canopy where it gleans from leaves and branches.
Usually seen in pairs or small groups.
Breeding season probably April to May. No other information.
Resident species.
