Identification
Male: Upperparts dark grey to bluish-grey, black in face (chin, front and around eye), white speculum, paler grey underparts, rufous vent, stubby, yellow, conical bill, white band at the base of the tail usually only visible from below or when the tail is spread.
Female is streaked, has reddish-brown on wings, and two pale wing bars.
Distribution
Western South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina

- Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia)
- C. a. schistaceifrons:
- Eastern Andes of central Colombia
- C. a. soederstromi:
- Andes of northern Ecuador (Imbabura to Chimborazo)
- C. a. insignis:
- Eastern slope of Andes of Peru (Cajamarca to Ancash)
- C. a. analoides:
- Western slope of Andes of Peru (Piura to Ayacucho)
- C. a. griseiventris:
- Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco)
- C. a. analis (subinsignis):
Habitat
High-altitude scrub and dry places at 2000-4000m.

Diet
Their diet mainly consists of seeds.
