63 cm. Black-metallic blue upperparts, head, hind neck, lower back, rump, uppertail-coverts, white underparts, short head crest, white wing patches, bare red skin beneath eye, pink feet, large orange caruncles.

Monotypic.

Shores, rocky headlands, cliffs and islands.

It nests in colonies. The eggs are chalky blue.
