Widespread throughout Asia. Found in: Russia, Siberia, Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia, China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar

Taxonomy

Subspecies

This is a polytypic species consisting of two subspecies[1].

  • L. n. altaica:
  • Mountains of north-eastern Afghanistan to south-western China (western Xinjiang ) and Altai Mountains
  • L. n. nemoricola:

Habitat

Mountain forest; observed at heights around 3600 meters.

They breed in rough rocky ridges, above the tree-line.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of seeds from grasses and alpine herbs. They also eat some insects.
