Spectacled Parrotbill - BirdForum Opus

Sinosuthora conspicillata

Identification

14 - 15cm. A small and long-tailed Parrotbill:

  • Prominent white eyering in sooty-coloured face
  • Dull chestnut-brown forehead to nape
  • Greyish olive-brown upperparts with buff tinge
  • Drab greyish-brown tail
  • Pinkish-grey to pinkish-brown underparts with broad sooty-brown streaks on throat and upper breast
  • Yellow to yellow-white bill

Sexes similar, juveniles darker and more uniform above.

Similar species

Recalling Vinous-throated Parrotbill, but note eyering, bill colour, tail and wings.

Distribution

Found in central China (Qinghai to Gansu, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei).
Rather uncommon in its limited range.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • S. c. rocki in Hubei
  • S. c. conspicillata in most of range

This species was formerly placed in the genus Paradoxornis.

Habitat

Temperate forests and moist montanes. Found at 1000 - 3300m.

Behaviour

No information about diet.
Usually seen in small groups of up to 15 birds, sometimes more. Forages low in vegetation.
Breeding season from June to August. No information about nest or clutch size.
Resident species.
